1978 KAWASAKI KZ 400

Way back before 400cc bikes were cool again, Kawasaki was ahead of the game unleashing the KZ400 on the world in 1974. The global economy was hurting, fuel prices were rising and import tariffs were making foreign built vehicles quite expensive. Kawasaki constructed a plant in Lincoln, NE to assemble motorcycles in the USA from parts shipped in from Japan starting in '75, thereby avoiding the majority of the tariffs and churned out this fuel efficient and inexpensive bike that made a great commuter that was also capable of 90mph on the highway and carried 3.2 gallons of fuel in the tank. With electric start (with a kick backup), 6 speeds in the tranny, a disc brake up front, dual exhaust and sharp UJM looks that echo it's larger cousins (the KZ650 and Z1) there was a lot to like here for American consumers, and the bike was a modest success. It was replaced by the KZ440 in 1980, that was essentially the same bike with a larger bore. This amazing example has been in a collector's stable for the past few years, it has incredibly low miles and has just been fully serviced locally by Vintage Motorcycle Repair. It has the accessory engine guards up front and the color matched 'boat tail' rear fender in the back, otherwise everything else is stock and original.
